Soulja boy confronts plies about suing him over the copyright of his song .
Plies has filed a lawsuit against GloRilla, Soulja Boy, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion, alleging copyright infringement of his 2008 song Me & My Goons. The Florida rapper claims that the “infrared countdown beat” from his track was unlawfully reused in Soulja Boy’s 2010 hit Pretty Boy Swag and GloRilla’s 2024 song Wanna Be along with its remix featuring Megan and Cardi. He is also targeting associated record labels, including Universal Music Group and Interscope Records, for damages. The lawsuit highlights the broader debate in hip-hop about originality and the limits of creative borrowing. While Plies asserts ownership of the beat’s origin, Soulja Boy and producers connected to Wanna Be have refuted these claims, pointing to earlier songs like Lil Wil’s 2007 My Dougie as possible sources for the beat’s inspiration. Soulja Boy has dismissed the allegations, accusing Plies of trying to claim credit for a widely circulated sound. The case, which could potentially redefine boundaries in sampling and beat creation, remains ongoing as none of the defendants have issued formal statements beyond initial rebuttals.
